You know how fast you are, but how fast should you be?

Exlore your full swimming potential. Calculate your swimming proficiency, see your ranking, your height adjusted time standards up to World Record Class and compare yourself to anyone.

This website is dedicated to those competitive swimmers and their coaches who are continually seeking improvement. Achieving best times and breakthrough swims is the resounding #1 goal of swimmers and coaches. A larger view suggests that the ultimate quest for swimmers is to achieve their full potential. The aim of this site is to provide a new tool to help swimmers reach their full potential. At the heart of this website is a new tool for competitive swimming, namely, the SWIMMING PROFICIENCY (SP) CALCULATOR.

SCIENTIFICALLY VALIDATED! See validation reports under "Learn About SP".

The SWIMMING PROFICIENCY (SP) CALCULATOR first calculates your SP and ranks you according to SP Standards: Recreational, All-Town, All-State, All-Region, All-American, National Team, Olympic Class, or World Record Class.   Given your SP Ranking, the SP Calculator then provides your customized Height Adjusted Time Standards.  These time standards are your suggested goal progression times.  At the very top is your World Record Class goal time which is also your suggested full potential goal time.

Additionally the SP Calculator provides:

  •  "In the News for this Event" where you can see height, times, and SP of the worlds fastest swimmers.
  • "Make Comparisons in the Event" where you can compare height, times, and SP of others.
  • At any time use the PRINTER FRIENDLY REPORT button to save a hardcopy for your records.

GET STARTED!  Go to the SP CALCULATOR page.

STEP 1: Enter height, time, and event data.

STEP 2: Click calculate.

See the Learn About Swimming Proficiency (SP) page for full articles:

  •  "How to Interpret Your SP Report".
  •  "The Head Start"Discusses the fact that in swimming, the race distance is not the same for everyone.  Lap for lap, taller swimmers literally do not swim as far.
  • "The Body Length Advantage" - Converting distances to equivalent body lengths explains most of the height advantage in swimming. In 100 yard events, a 6' 4" swimmer swims 47.4 BLs versus his 5' 10" competition who swims 4 more BLs, namely 51.4 BLs.  This is a 23' 4"  almost 8 yard handicap!  Or in terms of time it is a 4 second handicap.
  • "Swimming Proficiency - Validation" - Provides the scienific validation for the SP equation. Explains swimming height population statistics, SP data and substantiation, height vs turnover, height vs reach, trade factors, the body length, and more.
  • "Full Swimming Potential Attributes - The List" - An extremely valuable document for every thinking swimmer and coach.  Use this list to identify what attributes to improve.  WARNING:  The shear magnitude of the list may surprise you...and what you need to do to reach your full potential may be daunting.
  • "Your Full Swimming Potential Journey" - Defined as World Record Class swimming proficiency, realize how 100's of people swim this well.  If they can do it why not you?  Discusses how to start your journey by reviewing the list of mental and physical attributes versus personal handicaps.  Use the SP Calculator to get your height adjusted time standards.  At the top is your World Record Class SP Standard, which is your suggested full potential goal time.  Find out where you are, guage your handicaps and pick a goal standard.
  • "Goons in the Pool" - If we are not careful, mediocre (and very tall) athletes will steal the swimming spotlight causing general disrespect for our sport.
  • What is Success in Swimming?" - So a new personal best  time is success?  So success for a coach means 100% percent of swimmers make personal best times in a season ?  These widely accepted views of success in swimming are challenged in this article and a more noble success criteria, namely, SP standards is discussed.   What is your SP and what should it be?  How far have you penetrated your full potential?  Tall swimmers riding the coattails of being fast, may find they are good athletes with low SP and SHOULD BE much faster.  Shorter swimmers who can compete in a tall mans sport are likely superior athletes with high SP but little respect.  Given recognition and respect, these top shelf athletes will set new SP standards for the world.   So now, what do you call success?
  • "Why the Best Swimmers Go Unrecognized" - The fastest are drawn from only 10% percent of the population, the other 90% of swimmers offer a much better chance of providing BETTER swimmers.
  • "Whose Better?" - Find out whose better Phelps at 6'4" or Spitz at 6'0".  Find out if someone in your town swims better than swimmers on the national team.  Whose better, the 6' 0" swimmer going 21.5 in the 50 free, or the 5' 4" swimmer going 24.0?
  • And more...
  • AWARD TEMPLATES.  Offer your swimmers SWIMMING PROFICIENCY AWARDS as they reach the standards.  All-Town, All-State, All-Region, All-American, National Team, Olympic Class, World Record Class.
  • SP TRACKER.  Track your swimmers swimming proficiency, rank them for each event.
